Cheapest prop firm in 2026: what it really costs to get your first payout

Looking for the cheapest prop firm? Then don't just look at the checkout price. A challenge for a few dollars can end up costing you more than one for $80. Here's how to work out what your path to a first payout really costs.

Cheapest prop firm in 2026: what it really costs to get your first payout

Key takeaways

  • There is no single cheapest prop trading firm for everyone. What counts is how much you pay in total before your first payout, not the checkout price.
  • Real cost = challenge price × number of attempts + activation fee + subscription for the time it takes you to pass.
  • Activation fees, monthly subscriptions, pricey retakes and strict rules are what turn a cheap challenge into an expensive one.
  • A $1 challenge or a cheap futures entry often costs more in the end because of fees after you pass or monthly billing.
  • At Fintokei you pay a one-time fee from $34 (StartTrader, $5,000 account), with no subscription and no activation fee.
  • Use the code NEW20 for 20% off your first challenge – your first StartTrader costs just $27.

Lowest entry price vs. lowest real cost

When people say "cheap prop firm", most of them mean the challenge price. But that's only part of the bill.

This is the number that matters

A simple formula you can use for any firm:

Real cost = challenge price × number of attempts + activation fee + subscription for the time it takes you to pass

What prop challenges cost today

Prices mainly depend on account size and on what you trade.

  • Forex and CFDs: The smallest accounts start in the tens of dollars. Six-figure accounts cost hundreds to low thousands of dollars. You usually pay once.
  • Futures: The entry price often looks lower at first glance. But many futures prop firms charge a monthly subscription until you pass, plus an account activation fee after you do.
  • "$1 challenge" deals: Now and then you'll see a challenge for a symbolic price. It usually comes with an activation fee or stricter rules.

5 hidden costs that turn a cheap challenge into an expensive one

1. Activation fee

You pass the challenge, and before you get your account, you pay again. This fee is often higher than the challenge itself. Always check whether the firm charges one.

2. Monthly subscription

Some firms bill you every month until you pass. If it takes you three months, you pay three times.

3. Price of a retake

Most traders don't pass on their first try. That's why it matters how much a new attempt costs, and whether you can buy one at all. A cheap challenge you buy three times costs more than a pricier one you pass first time.

4. Rules that knock you out sooner

A low price is sometimes paid for with stricter rules:

  • a small daily loss limit – one bad day and you're out,
  • a time limit – you have to hit the target by a set date, even when the market isn't playing along,
  • a daily profit cap – you can't make more than a set share of the target in one day,
  • more phases – the more rounds, the more chances to slip up.

The stricter the rules, the more attempts you'll probably need. And the more expensive the whole path gets.

5. Payout conditions

A cheap challenge won't help you if you wait weeks for your money or your reward is capped low. Check what share of the profit you get, how fast the money arrives, and whether there's a limit on how much you can earn.

Worked example: 3 challenges, 3 different bills

Let's look at three made-up firms. We assume the trader needs two attempts and passing takes two months.

Firm A
Firm B
Firm C
Entry price
$1
$49 a month
$79 one-time
Activation fee
$159
$119
$0
Next attempt
$1
included in the subscription
$79
Total before first payout
$161
$217
$158

At first glance, Firm A looks like the obvious pick at $1. In the end, though, it costs more than Firm C, which has the highest checkout price. Firm B is the most expensive, because you pay every month plus activation.

The numbers are for illustration. Before you buy a challenge, plug the real prices of a specific firm into the formula.

  • Rules:
    • ProTrader and ProTrader Swing have no maximum time limit.
    • StartTrader gives you a second chance: go over the daily loss limit for the first time and your challenge isn't over – trading just pauses until the next day.

Fintokei StartTrader as the cheapest first step to a payout?

If you're new to prop trading, StartTrader is your ideal first challenge. It costs $34 and has just one phase with a 3% profit target – that's a $150 profit on a $5,000 account.

A second chance saves you buying another challenge

Go over the daily loss limit (2%) for the first time and your challenge isn't over. Trading just pauses until the next day, then you carry on.

With a regular challenge, one bad day would cost you a new purchase. With StartTrader, one mistake doesn't cost you another challenge. And repeat purchases are the biggest item on your path to a first payout.

What to keep in mind

We play fair, so here are the limits upfront:

  • Reward cap: you can withdraw up to $400 per StartTrader account.
  • Purchase limit: you can only buy it as one of your first two challenges.

StartTrader is a springboard. Once you reach your first payout on it, you know you're ready for ProTrader or SwiftTrader.

Count to three. And you're ready to go.

The new StartTrader is designed to make your first step into prop trading simple, affordable and stress-free. One phase, two chances and a 3% profit target. The rest is up to you.

Checklist: what to ask before you buy a challenge

  1. Do I pay once, or every month?
  2. Is there an activation fee after I pass?
  3. How much is a new attempt, and can I buy one at all?
  4. Is there a time limit? How big is the daily loss limit?
  5. Is there a daily profit cap?
  6. How many phases do I have to pass?
  7. What share of the profit do I get, and how fast does the money arrive?

Once you have answers to all seven, plug them into the formula and you'll see what the challenge really costs you.

FAQ

What is the cheapest prop trading firm?

There's no cheapest prop trading firm for everyone. It depends on your account size, the market you trade and how many attempts you'll need. The cheapest firm is the one where your path to a first payout costs the least in total – not the one with the lowest checkout price.

Is a $1 prop firm challenge worth it?

Only if it comes without an activation fee and strict rules. Challenges at a symbolic price often make up for it with a fee after you pass, or with rules that make you retake them. Always work out the total cost.

Why are futures prop challenges cheaper?

Their entry price is often lower, but many futures prop firms charge a monthly subscription and an activation fee after you pass. So overall they may not cost less than a one-time forex challenge.

Is a 1-step or a 2-step challenge cheaper?

It depends on the price and rules of the specific challenge. A 1-step challenge is usually faster but often has tighter loss limits. A 2-step one takes longer but usually leaves you more room for mistakes. Work out how many attempts you'd realistically need for each.

How much is the cheapest Fintokei challenge?

The cheapest is StartTrader at $34 with a $5,000 virtual account. With the code NEW20, your first StartTrader costs $27.
