From coal mine to trading terminal: Meet JohnM, the winner of June’s Fintokei Trading Race 🚀

Every month, Fintokei hosts a free trading competition. We reward the top 20 traders and spotlight the best of the best. Today’s story? Janusz from Poland - a miner chasing the dream of becoming a pro trader.

Night shifts & late-night trades 🌙

His name is Janusz, but in the trading world he goes by JohnM. In the June edition of the Fintokei Trading Race, he placed 2nd out of 2,051 participants, reaching an impressive profit of 105.44%. All this while trading mainly at night – after finishing long shifts underground.

JohnM works full-time in a coal mine.

I started trading three years ago. Back then, I was juggling a couple of side gigs too. I barely saw my own home. I needed something that would give me more time freedom – and that’s how I found trading.

Learning from books and the pros 📚

Like many self-taught traders, he began by watching the pros, comparing strategies, and absorbing everything he could. But he had one extra edge: “I spend a lot of time hiking or cycling, which is perfect for listening to audiobooks. I’m especially into psychology and personal development – they really help me expand my mindset.”

Price action is everything 📊

Instead of using candlestick charts like most, JohnM prefers range bars. They help him focus purely on price action, without getting distracted by timeframes. He mostly trades the NASDAQ index, usually long, and he’s not afraid to hold trades for several hours.

I approached the challenge with patience and discipline- no overtrading. I only entered trades that fully matched my setup.

And his advice for beginners? “Build a trading plan and keep a journal. I write down almost everything. It keeps me calm and focused.”

Trading as the way out 🔧→💼

When your day job is one of the most physically demanding in the world, trading can feel like a mental breeze in comparison. For JohnM, there’s no doubt – trading is his future.

“I trade my own broker accounts too, but prop trading appeals to me more. It gives access to larger capital and really pushes you to stay disciplined. That’s why I’m beyond happy with the result. I want to level up, go for bigger accounts, and maybe one day mentor others. My goal is to become a consistent trader and achieve financial independence.”

As the 2nd place winner of the June Fintokei Trading Race, JohnM received $700 and a free ProTrader challenge with a $100,000 virtual account. 🏆
